coatShort days and cold temperatures don’t mean you have to limit your outwear choices to dark, drab colors and heavy woolen fabrics. You can branch out from the usual black, brown and navy and wear whites and pastels. From trench coats to bomber jackets, this season’s styles call for a retro look that takes a new spin on Ingrid Bergman’s look in Casablanca, the 1940s bell-shaped jacket and the blazer (think Sandra Bullocks’ blazer-wearing fashion statement). Read on to learn more about this season’s trends in winter coats and jackets:

Trench

Trench coats are in vogue this season! Think Downton Abbey star Michelle Dockery’s trench coat at London Fashion Week. This timeless style is great because it works so well with everything from cigarette pants to winter boots. Try a sleek full- or hip-length shape with narrow sleeves and a flared hem to create a slim silhouette and a tailored shape elongates the body. You’ll find a great selection of trench coats at Macy’s and DKNY, Michael Kors and Steven Madden trench coats at Lord & Taylor.

Cape

A romantic cape provides lots of coverage, comfort and warmth and you can opt for a one made from a lighter fabric, like velvet, if you dress warmly in layers underneath. H&M carries a gorgeous, hip-length, bell-shaped cape in black. Cost: $59.95.

Bomber
The varsity look is in this season with bomber jackets finishing at the waist with an elastic band, zip front, and cuffed sleeves leading the way. Express has an excellent selection of bomber jackets including this Express menswear-inspired bomber jacket with a crackled finish.

Bell-shaped
This very feminine Chanel style features a slight flare-out in the bottom section and works well with something fitted, like leggings or thigh-high boots.

Blazer
Blazers are back! You can wear a boyfriend blazer or you can look smart and sophisticated in a lightly over-sized blazer like the ones featured at Target. They’re east on the pocketbook, too, starting at just $29.99.

Biker jackets
Motorcycle chic is in style this season. You can opt for an actual motorcycle jacket or buy something with a more stylish and high-end look. Try the Harley Davidson store for a great selection of biker jackets or Timberland for the designer look.

Sleeveless
Sleeveless jackets were featured on the runway and Beijing airport by none other than Victoria Beckham and allow for flexibility, layering and style. Nordstrom has a superb collection of sleeveless jackets to fit all tastes and budgets, starting at just $68 a pop.
