Shift dresses have been a wardrobe staple for many women that first became popular in the 1960s. It features straight lines and just hangs from the shoulders without cinching at the waist. It’s a great look for women of different body types because it isn’t clingy. The dress is typically sleeveless and knee length. Dresses are ideal for both work and casual wear, and they cut down on the number of clothing pieces that you have to coordinate, iron and clean.
This week, you can find shift dresses on sale with a number of retailers. Here are some of our favorites. Snatch them up while you can!
This Old Navy Sleeveless Shift Dress currently retails for $19.00, but at a regular price of $26.94, you can afford it even if you miss the sale. The dress comes in several different colors including black, navy, black colorblock, blue colorblock and warm colorblock. In the traditional style, it is sleeveless with a high neckline and hits right at the knees.
The Fruit for Breakfast Dress from Modcloth is a beautiful example of a shift dress. It’s a little more sophisticated than the simple dress from Old Navy and features a collared neckline and a pintucked, pleated style. This dress comes with a sash, so even bustier women can wear the look without appearing to have no waist at all. This dress only comes in the plum and peach color combination in sizes small, medium and large. It currently runs $54.99.
For a big splash of color, try this Neon Rose Shift Dress from J. Crew. It, too, falls just above the knee. It’s machine washable, so you don’t have to worry about taking this dress to the cleaners. It is ideal for summertime with its bright hue, but can be toned down with a blazer or cardigan to wear during any season. It is currently $44.99.
Don’t rule out Walmart, either. They offer this Plus-size Berry and Black Shift Dress for $19.88. It has three-quarter length sleeves instead of the traditional sleeveless look, but it still hits right above the knee and has a scoop neckline. It is a poly/spandex blend and is machine washable for easy care.
