Casual tops cover a lot of ground. You’ve got your garden variety T-shirts, camisoles, blouses and everything else in between. Trying to figure out which ones you need and how to wear them can be tricky, particularly if you’re new to putting together a wardrobe that works interchangeably with all the other pieces in your closet. Here are some tips that can help.
Pay Attention to Fabric
How you intend to wear your tops helps to dictate the fabric. If you want a camisole or tank to wear under a sheer top, for example, then you want something that’s a little silkier so that it slides easily. To wear a top under a sweater, look for lighter fabrics that won’t get you too warm. If you’re planning a multi-season wardrobe, then you want different weights of fabrics to carry you through the year.
Choose the Right Neckline
Necklines do a lot for you when it comes to your tops. Some are more flattering than others, though, so it helps to try on a few different neck styles to see which ones are more attractive on you personally. V-necks tend to look good on most people, though, because they help to draw the eye up to your face.
Experiment with Styles and Textures
Look at your current wardrobe. Do you tend to gravitate toward one particular style or texture time and time again? If you do, then it’s definitely time to break out of that box. Try tops of different lengths, tops that have different types of trim or no trim at all. There is a whole big world out there from which to choose, and it’s time to add a bit of variety to your wardrobe.
Dress Them Up or Down
While you’re in an experimenting mood, are you in a bit of a rut about how you wear your casual tops? If you wear a particular top all the time with your black dress pants to work, try wearing it occasionally with jeans or with one of the skirts you mean to wear more often. The idea works in reverse, too. If you’ve got a casual top that you tend to wear to dress up your jeans, try it out with some of your other pieces of clothing. You might be surprised at the outfit ideas you come up with.
Finding the right casual tops can take a little bit of work, but once you know what looks good on you and what you need to spruce up your wardrobe, you’re that much closer to shopping bliss.
