Building a wardrobe isn’t all that difficult, but most of us tend to go about it haphazardly, picking up a piece here and a piece there. Personally, I’ve found that following a checklist of sorts helps me to make sure that I’ve got flattering pieces for my plus-size figure while also covering all the different clothing bases that my wardrobe needs to cover.
A Proper Foundation
What you wear under your clothing is as important as anything else you wear. Your bra in particular needs to fit properly so you can show off your assets. If it’s been a while since you last had a fitting, go have one done. Your bra size changes regularly, believe it or not, so it’s essential that you get the right size.
A Wrap Dress
When Diane Von Furstenberg invented the wrap dress, she made magic happen for women of all shapes and sizes. If you’re worried about something that form-fitting, you really shouldn’t be. A wrap dress covers a multitude of sins, and it highlights your waist, giving you a sleek hourglass shape, even if you feel like you don’t have one.
A White Button-down Shirt
A white button-down is a classic look, and it’s so versatile. You can dress it up or down, whatever you need. And since white goes with everything, you don’t have to worry about matching.
A Tailored Blazer
Don’t go with one of those boxy blazers that makes you look like a linebacker. You want one that has darts so it gives you the definition that your shape demands. Much like the white button-down, a tailored blazer dresses up and down equally easily.
The Perfect Jeans
No wardrobe is complete without the perfect pair of jeans. Don’t go for the “mom jeans” with the high waist and questionable back pockets. If you go with a darker wash, you can even get away with dressing them up or wearing them to the office more easily. Don’t settle, either. Try them on until you find the perfect pair.
A Pair of Wide Leg Trousers
Wide leg pants balance you out, particularly if you are a little more top-heavy. You don’t want to swim in the legs, of course, but look for more of a boot cut or a slight flare. For the most bang for your buck, stick with a neutral color, like black or navy. You can liven them up with colorful or patterned shirts.
Every girl must have a little black dress, and plus-size girls are no exception. They’re classic and classy, and you never know when you’ll need to go all out for a cocktail party.
A V-neck Shirt
A V-neck is going to make your neck look longer and leaner, and will help draw everyone’s eye upward. If you’re not completely comfortable, or the V is especially deep, pair it with a tank or a camisole for a more conservative look.
