Take an inventory of what you already have. Open up your closet and take out all the clothes you wear to work. Make a note of items you love and often reach for the most. Is the  the perfect tailored pantsuit or the classic black sheath dress? Figure out what you find yourself wearing the most and make a mental note of it. There is a reason you gravitate towards particular styles and pieces. You need to figure out which pieces you wear and why. If you live in pantsuits, you may want to invest in at least one more pantsuit or perhaps another blazer.

Wait for your favorite stores to go on clearance. It’s May now, and just a matter of weeks until most department stores start marking down their spring and summer wares to make room for upcoming fall merchandise. If you’re on a tight budget, clearance sales are the best time to shop. There are still a few caveats to keep in mind when shopping on discount.  You may have a harder time finding clothes and accessories in the colors or sizes you’re looking for. Another thing to keep in mind when shopping clearance sales is that you may discover some clothes have stains, rips, or tears. If you find such a garment, put it back on the rack. You want clothes that are polished and presentable.

You don’t need so spend a lot of money on clothes for work. All you really need are core basics that you can mix and match, a few fun items that are work appropriate, and accessories. Great accessories don’t have to cost a lot of money, and you can easily update your look every few weeks or so with just a few new extras.  Such accessories you can update with include jewelry, scarves, belts, and shoes.
