bra (400x400)Evening wear is complicated stuff. If you wear the wrong foundation garments, you’ll end up looking frumpy rather than elegant and refined. The problem is that there are so many different styles of bras out there, so which ones are best to wear with which type of neckline? Here are some tips that can help you narrow down your choices.

Your Everyday Bra

The one style of bra that you most likely can’t get away with at all for evening wear is your normal everyday bra. They’re just not designed to be worn under formal wear, and odds are very good that unless you have a high-necked dress on that covers your entire upper body, some part of the bra is going to be visible. So you’re going to need to branch out into one of the more specialized bras.

Balconette Bras

Balconettes are a form of demi-cup bra, since the cups tend to not have as much coverage as other styles of bra. The bottom of the bra has a thick band and there’s quite a bit of support underneath and outside the breasts. The inside of the cup tends to sharply descend to the front of the band, giving you a sexier look, especially with a more open neckline. The straps are also likely to be farther down your shoulders, helping to hide the bra under evening wear. You’re going to reach for a balconette when you’re wearing a V-neckline or possibly even off-the-shoulder designs.

Strapless Bras

Strapless bras get a bad rap because most women think that you need to be a AA cup in order to hold them up. The bra has a thick band that offers a bit more support than you might think. The key to getting the right strapless bra is to make sure that it’s the right size. Try on several before you commit to one, and that will help you to find the exact one. If you can, bring your dress with you to try on with the bra to make sure that the two pieces work well together. Strapless bras are perfect for any strapless dress, bustier-style top or dresses with complicated necklines.

Plunge Bras

When you really can’t go without a bra but you have a deep V-neck or other low-cut neckline, you absolutely must go with a plunge bra. The cups make a more dramatic plunge at the center of the bra and these types of bra often have a little bit more padding and are cut to give the girls a boost while they’re at it.

Find the right bra, and you’ll look fantastic no matter what style of dress you’re wearing.
