Cocktail Dresses on a Budget

The holiday season is here, and now it’s time shop for the perfect cocktail dress (or two) for all the parties you will be attending. As tempting as it may be to buy the prettiest and most expensive dress you see on the rack, you still have some time to search for your dream frock for less. Here are some places you should check before plunking down the credit card.

1- Discount Department Stores

You can find a little black dress at Neiman Marcus or Saks Fifth Avenue for $100 and up, or you can find a little black dress at Kohl’s or JC Penney’s for less than $50. Right now is the perfect time to shop for party dresses, because they tend to go on sale during the holidays. A big bonus from shopping at discount department stores: you will save extra money, and that can go towards shoes, a bag, and accessories!

2- Thrift Stores

If you’re on a tight budget this holiday, or you’re looking for something more unique, why not check out your favorite thrift or consignment shop? You can easily peruse the racks to find a dress that’s guaranteed not to be the same style your best friend is wearing.

3- Revive an Older Dress

If you already have a cocktail dress or two that you love, but don’t really want to wear again, you could modify it to look like a brand new dress. Change it up with some fresh accessories like a scarf or a cropped sweater. If you’re naturally skilled at fashion design or sewing, you could make some design adjustments. Turn a strapless black dress into something a little more glam by sewing a colorful print scarf onto the neckline to create a fresh halter dress, or you could take a pink bubble skirt dress and tie a long polka-dot ribbon around the waist.
