Don’t Shun the Coats Just Yet…

With spring arriving (slowly but surely), you can’t walk through a clothing store without being bombarded with bathing suits, summer dresses, and short sleeves. This is great new.  For the bargain shopper, it means that the winter clothing is finally on sale! Spring is to winter clothing as November first is to Halloween candy.

While the fashion savvy among you are probably thinking, “But how can I shop for next winter when I don’t know what will be in style?” It’s simple: aim for the basics!

Every winter there are a few items of clothing that everybody needs to have in abundance:

  • Long-sleeved shirts
  • Thick socks
  • Sweaters
  • Jeans
  • Thermals

When bargain hunting for clothing that won’t be worn for a few seasons, stick to the basics: solid colors, heavy duty materials, etc. Certain items, like the thick wool sweater, will never go out of style so long as you stay away from patterns.

Another item you might think about shopping for is next year’s winter coat. With the weather heating up, the last thing anybody really wants to think about are the cold temperatures of winter. This makes it the perfect time to look for next winter’s parka. Pea coats, ski coats, and trench coats never go out of style. They are also very expensive in-season so it is in your best interest to purchase the coat in the spring and then stash it in the closet for the next few months.

Thick socks come in handy year round so make sure that you look for them on clearance when you hit your favorite department store. These socks rarely go on sale at an outdoor sports store, but in a department store they often go on sale as soon as the flip-flops come out to play.

Your skin might itch just looking at all of the wool, but think of the money you will save in the fall!
