bowtieGraduation season is quickly approaching for college seniors around the country. Among the hundreds of other items that are occupying to do lists during this busy time, one thing that should be of priority is the graduation outfit. For most graduating men, the outfit under the gown means less to than their female counterparts. Whether it matters or not, it is very important to ‘look the part’ at college graduation…even under the robe. Below are a few pointers as to how to look your best on graduation day without breaking the bank.

The most important piece of information to keep in mind when planning what to wear for graduation is that this day will be one of the most memorable and important days of your entire life. Think of this day as the culmination of triumphs, tragedies, and tests. Nothing would be more insulting than to wear a simple shorts and t-shirt under the esteemed graduation robe. It is essential to dress formally to look your best when walking across the stage. The go to item should be a suit, but if a full suit is unavailable, do not stress. While one should look formal at graduation, it is best not to go out and purchase an entirely new outfit for this one occasion.

The best place to find a formal graduation outfit is actually in your own closet. By the age of 21-22, all men have at least one button down shirt and nice pair of pants. Putting together a graduation outfit can be as simple as finding a pair of dress pants and pairing them with a matching shirt. This outfit is of no cost, and it will still look stylish. It is important, however, to remember to wear a tie that matches not only the outfit, but also the graduation robe. It will look incredibly tacky to walk across the stage in a tie that is the same (or obnoxiously different) color than the gown. If you cannot find someone to lend you a matching tie, simply head to the nearest thrift shop. Many shops have a full stock of ties donated from the estates of businessmen. This can be an easy way to get a matching tie for only a few dollars.

The part of your outfit that will be most visible when walking across the stage will be your shoes. Be absolutely sure that the shoes are polished and match the entire outfit. Sloppy shoes will definitely ruin even the best outfit. If no dress shoes can be found in your closet, simply ask a relative or friend to borrow a matching pair of dress shoes. This way, you can have appropriate shoes without breaking the bank.

Overall, just relax and enjoy the day. Looking your best will make things less stressful if planned and executed well before the morning of the event. As always, search thrift shops for the best bargains, and even borrow outfits if necessary.
