Dress Like a Star (on a Shoestring Budget)

starNothing beats Oscar night for seeing the best in evening wear fashion. I love it when stars wear designer gowns that make us viewers sigh “Ooh la la.” Whether it be Jessica Chastain’s nude body hugging gown by Armani Prive, Jennifer Lawrence’s bridal inspired Dior Haute Couture, or Amy Adams’ powder blue Oscar de la Renta princess gown, the stars’ glamorous gowns are to die for. Every woman can look like a star with a little bit of resourcefulness and planning; here are some helpful tips, so that you’ll be in an Oscar winner when it comes to dressing fashionably:

  • “Never wait until you need an evening dress to buy one!” – Isaac Mizrahi
  • A floor-length gown in a luxurious fabric with beautiful draping will look stunning.
  • An evening gown with a lining looks better than one without, because a lining will helps the gown hold its shape as the night wears on.
  • Sequins add a glamorous touch—just make sure they’re not too big and that they’re all the same color.
  • Accessorize to glamorize: Jet beading (think flappers in the 1920s) is subtle, yet elegant.
  • Wear bracelets. Wear a cocktail ring. Shopping at antique shops and vintage jewelry stores is a great way to purchase baubles that glitter at great prices.
  • Heels: high and strappy are best.
  • Belts: Metallic or bejeweled.
  • Statement earrings or a bold necklace: one or the other but not both.
  • Gloves – add that Grace Kelly touch.
  • Posture – here’s something that you can improve, and it won’t cost a penny. Good posture will make you look beguiling.
  • EBay, Etsy, and Craigslist often feature huge discounts on designer gowns. Various sellers on eBay will even let you specify your size and color choices. Type in keywords like “designer gown” or the name of your favorite designer, and you’re sure to find some fabulous gowns.
  • If you can sew (or know someone who does), Vogue Patterns features designer sewing patterns. A tailor made gown is a great way to save money, ensure the gown fits your body to a T, and you can even add embellishments to make the gown an original.
  • Vintage clothing and consignment shops are another great source of beautiful gowns at affordable prices.
