dresssesWe live in an era when women have more say than ever regarding their fashion choices for evening wear. While that should be a good thing, often times it isn’t. Sometimes it’s hard to admit that a puff ball skirt isn’t right for you or that your over-40 legs no longer look good in a mini skirt. Whatever age you are, the key to dressing your age lies in donning evening wear that will make you look your very best. The following tips will help you look fabulous at any age:

20s

Your figure is the #1 factor in determining what you can wear for a night on the town, so pretty much anything goes except for muffin top midriffs and clothing that’s too tight. Show off your buff arms in a sleeveless cocktail dress and your beautiful neckline and décolletage in a strapless gown. Fall 2013 fashion tips: Don this season’s cut-out gowns in jewel-toned plum, ruby red and emerald green. Skip strappy evening shoes and wear stiletto booties in metallics or black instead.

30s

By the time you’ve reached your 30s, you’re no longer a slave to the fashion industry because you know what does and doesn’t look good on you. As your figure and lifestyle change, you may need to reassess your evening wardrobe from your twenties. For instance, maybe you’re not clubbing as often and are socializing in restaurants instead. Fall 2013 evening wear fashion trend worth noting: This season calls for luxurious furs and stoles in bold colors to be paired with evening gowns.

40s

By now your evening wardrobe should be 60:40–60 percent clothing that you can wear across the fashion seasons and 40 percent current season clothes. Camouflage batwing arms with three-quarter length sleeves. Fall 2013 style tip: Add metallic silvers and golds to your little black dress and us a metallic clutch instead of a plain evening bag. Fall 2013 evening wear fashion tip: Wear a sophisticated, glamorous-type gown made from satin, silk, velvet or chiffon.

50s

If your skin and figure can take it, skip “age appropriate” and go for whatever is in style albeit slightly toned down. The V-neck gown is a flattering style that highlights your cleavage and makes your neck look longer. Choose your dress length based on your legs. If you still have great legs, by all means wear your dresses on the short side. Fall 2013 fashion hint: You know your signature styles and can update them with this season’s colors in jewel-toned colors and luxurious satin, chiffon, velvet and metallic fabrics.

60s+

Actresses Helen Mirren and Susan Sarandon often wear evening wear that says “class” and “sexy.” You can, too. Try a low back dress that drapes to your mid-back or a slit skirt that shows a subtle flash of leg. Clean, simple lines look best. Fall 2013 fashion tip: Let your inner feminine shine in a beautiful geometric gown with a pastel floral print in an earth tone color or wear one of this season’s glamorous metallic gowns in silver or gold.
