Giving Back Without Spending a Dime – Part 3

by Jodi Furman | November 16th, 2011 | Shopping Secrets

This is the final installment of a three part series. Last week Jody suggested we give back by using coupons. This week she lets us know about matching donations, as well has how to check if a charity is legitimate.

If you opt to donate cash rather than goods – be sure to check with your employer to see whether they will match that donation.  Many companies, both large and small, match contributions to legitimate charities dollar for dollar, and they will effectively DOUBLE your donation with little to no effort on your part.

And, with any donation, be sure to carefully select which charity you entrust with your money.  Do your research to see which charity is most efficient with the highest percentage of donations reaching those who need it most, rather than going to cover operating expenses.  There is an independent charity evaluator, charitynavigator.org, which reviews and rates over 5400 charitable organizations based on their organizational efficiency and their organizational capacity so you can make an intelligent giving decision.
