Look Thin and Fabulous in Evening Wear

Nothing beats getting all dressed up to go somewhere special! Whether it be an opera gala, a symphony concert, a five star restaurant, or a party with friends, it’s fun to put on your most elegant clothes and accessories and look glamorous for the evening – images of Audrey Hepburn, Jackie O, and Grace Kelly come to mind. You can transform yourself into Cinderella and look thinner too if you follow these simple and easy tips for looking your best on special occasions.

The power of black – Black matches everything, and it will instantly make you look 10 pounds lighter.

Dresses – Wear a dark colored, A-line or sheath dress with a v-neck or ruched bodice.

Tops – You can’t go wrong with an elegant white blouse with billowy sleeves. A cropped jacket in a dark color is a good choice, too.

Pants – A good pair of light wool sailor pants with wide legs are slimming and elegant. Avoid front pleats and choose a dark color to look thinner.

Accessorize to Look Thin

Less is more – You don’t want to look like a Christmas tree with ornaments hanging all over your body. Instead, choose a few eye popping accessories to draw attention to your best features and away from problem areas.

Heels – There’s nothing like high heeled shoes or boots to make you look and feel 10 pounds lighter. As for how high your heels should be, I’ll defer to fashion designer Michael Kors. “How high can you handle and stay in for two hours without having two Advil?” Classic high heel pumps in neutral colors like black, brown, bone, or gray look sophisticated and will last through many a change in fashion trends.

Handbags – Choose something sleek and distinctive. Style expert Charla Krupp (How to Never Look Fat Again) suggests wearing a large handbag to draw attention away from bulges (think Jessica Simpson). One caveat – choose a bag in proportion to your size.

Jewelry – Well chosen jewelry can make you look like a princess (and a thinner one at that). Bling on your fingers and wrists draws attention away from your upper arms. A long necklace and long earrings will slim your face and neck.

Scarves – A long, dark and sequined scarf will add an elegant touch while hiding flabby arms.

Underwear – Thong and bikini underwear, pantyhose waistband roll, and tight fitting bras accentuate bulges. Instead, dress like the stars; pretend you’ll be walking down a red carpet, and wear shapewear for a smoother appearance. A Spanx Hide & Seek Half Slip or Slim Cognito Scam-less Mid-Thigh Bodysuit can do wonders, as can Maidenform’s Firm Control It High-Waist Thigh Slimmer.

Outerwear – Often, your choice of coat will determine the first impression you’ll make. An elegant trench coat will make you look like Audrey Hepburn walking along the Seine. Other options include a cape or an A-line, single breasted coat that cinches your waist.  For a slimmer look, wear dark colors, narrow lapels, and aim for a monochromatic look by keeping all layers the same color from head to toe.
