UGG! or Ugh?

UGGOne of the hottest trends continuing to sweep the US is the UGG boot.  These boots, which herald from California, grace the feet of young and old women alike.  Because the cost of these shoes is high, several manufacturers have jumped on the trend with cheap knock off versions.  What do you think?  Do UGGs make you smile, or do you say, “ugh” when you see a peer wearing them?  Let’s take a closer look at the UGG phenomenon.

History

Contrary to popular belief, UGGs do not come from Australia. Instead, in 1978 an Australian gentleman landed in southern California with a dream for a shoe company.  In the many years since, UGGs have slowly, but steadily gained popularity.  It wasn’t until the year 2000 that UGGs spread across the nation.  As outlined on the UGG website, “…a love that began on the beaches had become an icon of casual style. It was at this time that the love for UGG grew in the east, over the Rockies and in Chicago. In 2000, UGG Sheepskin boots were first featured on Oprah’s Favorite Things® and Oprah emphatically declared that she “LOOOOOVES her UGG boots.” From that point on, the world began to notice.”

Cozy Boots

Most women got to know the UGG company through their comfy boots.  Made from quality materials, these boots keep feet warm and dry in even the coldest weather.  As the company explains, “The UGG Australia story begins with one magical material, sheepskin. The mastery of this distinctive material in the fine craft of boot and shoemaking is deeply ingrained in our rich history, it’s what defines us. By fashioning boots, shoes, sandals, apparel and accessories using the finest available sheepskins, we deliver a luxurious comfort that is truly one of a kind, escapes words and cannot be equaled by any ordinary material.”

Other Awesome Footwear

What many women don’t realize is that the UGG brand is more than a boot line.  In addition to heavy winter footwear, they have casual shoes, slippers, and even sandals.  Currently the company is promoting their brand for use in summer weddings. They feature sparkly white boots, white puffy slippers, and dainty flip flops for the bride.  They also have two cute clutches for use on a woman’s special day.  Check out the I Do! Clutch here.  They also have great wedge sandals to take on vacation and shoes for the office.

Beware of Fakes

Because the UGG brand has become so popular, several companies have started counterfeit operations.  Their website warns the buyer to beware of such fakes.  If you see UGG shoes being sold for unbelievably low prices, then they probably are not the real thing.  Only authorized UGG dealers  can guarantee the real thing.

UGG or Ugh?

As a woman who owns a pair of UGG boots, I can vouch for their quality.  These boots feel cozy, and they wear well.  Although I would never wear the silver sequined versions – I’ll leave those for my teen daughters – I would purchase another pair of these boots.  What do you think?  Leave a comment below.
