Want an accessory that not only looks great but is also practical? Then buy a quality umbrella (or two or three) for the summer season. Not only does this valuable item keep you dry, it can also block the harmful rays of the sun. From playful see-through versions, to the classic jet-black styles, there is an umbrella available on the market which would complement any outfit.

Historically, umbrellas have been used throughout the ages by a variety of cultures for a myriad of purposes, from outfit accents to weapons against attackers.  In addition, these handy accessories have also been an integral part of some religious ceremonies.  The word itself originates from the Latin word umbra, meaning shade or shadow, but from its longevity as an accessory, we know it has been used for much more than just a sun shade.

Here’s how to use an umbrella as your “go to” summer fashion accessory.

1.  Business Attire – You’re dressed to the nines for an important business meeting, yet the forecast says rain is imminent.  Make sure to take along your best raincoat, and your statement umbrella.  This is not the time to use your cutesy umbrella; instead, opt for solid colors and quality construction.  You don’t want to ruin your professional look with a flimsy or broken umbrella either. If you take along this useful accessory, you will arrive for your meeting looking polished instead of “washed up.”

2.  Beach Protection – Any visit to the beach should include an umbrella to allow for respite from the sun’s harsh rays.  Again, look for umbrellas that will be able to withstand a strong breeze, as well as offer a large radius of shade.  Contrary to the seriousness of a business umbrella, you can opt for fun colors and prints for this accessory. Sometimes, especially if you have young children, the protection of an umbrella can mean the difference between a good time and a bad time at the beach. Because of this, you might want to take along two, one for you and one for the kids.

3.  Shopping Fun – Many women love to explore the quirky shops that dot a lakeshore or beach during the summer months.  If you plan such a shopping excursion, stash a foldable umbrella in your tote.  Again, cheery colors are optimum, as even if it pours on your shopping adventure, this useful accessory will offer a bit of sunshine to your day.

As you can see, having the right umbrella for each situation you will encounter this summer is important.  Whether you are going to work, to the beach, or to the outdoor mall, make sure to take along this classic (and useful) accessory.  Bonus – since umbrellas cost little, you can afford to invest in plenty of styles and colors.

Check out the website Umbrellas.com for a fantastic assortment of umbrellas.  They have choices galore – from themed ones to clear ones to mini ones.  This site should give you ideas on how to incorporate this accessory into your fashion arsenal.
